KATHAKALI DANCE
The most renowned art form, Kathakali is one of bamboozling array of performing arts and festivals to thrive. The art form of Kathakali crystallized at around the same time as Shakespeare was writing his plays, though elements of it can be seen in temple rituals that developed from as early as the 2nd century. The Kathakali performance is the dramatized presentation of a play usually based on the Hindu epics the Ramayana, the Mahabharata and the Puranas. All the great themes are covered-righteousness and evil, frailty and courage, poverty and prosperity, war and peace- and the setting encompasses both the terrestrial and the cosmic.
Drummers and singers accompany the actors. The script is vocalized by the singers but it's the performers who actually tell the story through precise movements, particularly mudras (hand gestures) and facial expressions. Traditionally, performances took place in temple grounds and went from 8pm until dawn; now, shorter performances in other open-air locales, as well as indoor halls, are also popular.
CHAVITTUNATAKOM DANCE
Chavittunatakom Dance in Kerala is one of the oldest dance forms in Kerala. Its history begins with advent of the Portuguese to the Malabar Coast of Kerala. It means 'Stamping Drama'. During the dance, the dancers stamp on the dance floor. This stamping is called Chavittu from where the name of this unique dance form of Kerala originates.
The glittering embellishments, beautiful dresses and European characters make this dance quite unique. Chavittunatakom Dance is considered to be successful only if the stage caves in with too much of stamping.
KOLKKALI DANCE
It is highly rhythmic dance which is performed by the agrarian classes. The rhythm of this dance is set by a harmonious synchronization of the tapping of the feet to the striking of sticks. The dancers sing and move in a circular form as they dance and strike the sticks in unison. Chanda, Elathalam, Mathalam and Changila are the musical instruments, which is used in this dance.
DUFFMUTTU DANCE
Duffmuttu is one of the famous dances in Kerala which is also known as Aravanamuttu. It is staged as a social event during festivals and nuptial ceremonies. Duffmuttu is a group dance performance popular among the Muslims of Malabar. During the Duffmuttu dance performance, the artistes beat the Duff, while the leader of the group sings the lead. The songs are often tributes to martyrs, heroes and saints.
KUTIYATTAM DANCE
Kutiyattam dance is the earliest classical dramatic art form of Kerala which means "acting together". It is a composition of dramatics, acting, and dancing. Mizhavu drums, small cymbals, idakka drum, wind instrument kuzhal, and conch shell are used to provide music for the play.
MOHINIYATTAM DANCE
Mohiniyattam Dance is one of the most beautiful dance forms of Kerala. Mohiniyattam is the classical dance form of Kerala which portrays feminine love. It is closely related to Bharathanatyam of Tamilnadu, Costumes and ornaments of Mohiniyattam have much in common with female characters of Koodiyattam and Kathakali. The language used in the lyrics is a pleasant mixture of Malayalam and Sanskrit, known as Manipravalam. The accompaniments for Mohiniyattam are Vocal, Veena, Venu, Maddalam and Idakka.

Puttur Students Ink Their Names in History through Research
News & Pics: Mounesh VishwakarmaPuttur, Dec 3: Students of Ramakrishna High School here have, through their reearch, proved that ink can be manufactured by using naturally available things, which do not have any practical use for the society. Their invention has gained national level recognition, and has been chosen for international level competition.
Both Pramod and Bhargav believe that researches and inventions are not bound by the limits of age, and that avid interest to achieve something is the only driving force behind them. The recognition their invention has earned has spurred them further to evince more interest in their researches and be more creative.
The boys have proved that ink can be produced by using Alalekai (terminalia chebula - black myrobalan), Kadugeru (wild cashew), Kumkuma Kai (a kind of nut) and Shankha Pushpa (blue flowers borne by climbing herb), which are commonly found in the farms, thickets and forests of the area. Their interest could bloom into invention because of the contributions by teachers and parents alike. These two students have proved that recognition of the hidden talents and inspiration from teachers and close ones can bring out great ideas concealed inside the children.
These two students exhibited their invention at the national science exhibition held recently at Worli in Maharashtra. Out of 87 teams which participated in the exhibition, only eight, including the Puttur team, were chosen for awards. Bhargav and Pramod received citation, gold medal and laptops as prize. These two young scientists are set to fly our national flag high at Los Angeles next year.
Pramod N V is the son of Vishnumurty N from Nakkare in Badagannur village in the taluk.. Bhargav C S is the son of Navamanila Subbanna Shastri from Pangalayi within town municipal limits. Bhargav says that activities of the science club of his school, and information programmes about different plants and vegetations, apart from guidance by teachers, inspired them to achieve further. They were guided by Vasanti K, teacher of the school, in their research. Headmaster, Sridhar Rai, also extended support to their interests, while science teachers, Jayalakshmi, Trutpi and Shobha, contributed with their advices. Bhargav greatefully acknowledges the support of parents and guidance by teachers, which he says, enabled the two of them to register this distinct achievement.
Pramod N V and Bhargav C S, tenth standard students of the above school, gained national attention recently, by presenting their research at the national level science exhibition. They have now been chosen to participate in the international science exhibition set to be hosted by Los Angeles in USA in May next year.

Does Electric Car have Future in India?
Indians are well aware of their traffic issues. In excruciating detail, in fact. The conceptually improbable assortment of vehicles which infests India’s roads is enough to produce a national wince while even considering it. The distinction between car insurance and life insurance sometimes needs to be checked. The good news (for once) for India’s eyesore-averse public is that electric cars, and an all-Indian car concept, are a perfect match. Those who’ve been following the career of the Tata Nano, which in 2008 received international attention as the world’s cheapest new car, will know the business angles. The Tata Nano and related designs could also be India’s ticket to both a national problem solver and a pricelessly valuable export as electric cars. The Tata Nano class of car has one huge advantage as a potential electric car: its frame. It’s a lightweight design. Electric cars perform much better without having to lug around massive frames. For manufacturers, the Tata also has another big advantage as an electric car - much cheaper production costs. If a diesel powered Tata Nano cost $2500 to buy in 2008, an electric version would come in well under that figure to produce. India’s ability to produce cheap, efficient space missions is well-known. This is the automotive version of that scenario. A quick glance at the costing of foreign electric cars is a rather graphic reminder that India does do some things far more cost effectively than other countries, and the Tata was already a glaring example of far better cost efficiency to start with. It would take one of India’s several million qualified CAD designers about half an hour to produce the specifications for a category-killing export car. The employment a product like this and its related assemblies could produce for the domestic market alone would be valuable to India’s economy. The exports would be worth billions. The Tata Nano class doesn’t even really require retooling to become an electric car, just a slightly different assembly process. If one also considers the possibilities of adding Indian- made extras like local GPS, electronics, etc, the car becomes a sort of Indian Expo of potential products. The Japanese car industry was the forerunner of the Japanese economic boom. With Japan’s cars came Japanese technology. Chinese outsourcing introduced Chinese technology around the world. America itself developed based on the marketing of its lifestyle and related technology around the world. There’s no reason why India, with an already existing production capability and reliable design concept, couldn’t do exactly the same thing, and on a huge scale. The skills and production capacity are ready to go and can easily be expanded to meet demand. The products can even be promoted globally in the world’s biggest movie market, Mumbai. A Bollywood star in an Indian car could be as big as Audrey Hepburn promoting scooters, (which didn’t even really exist as commercial products until that 1950s promotion) and with a global reach starting with a billion or so people, could make quite an impact. Perhaps most importantly, Indians will be able to buy their own cars and get their car insurance quotes and drive on their own roads without wincing. |
